Many houses and apartments built before 1978 have paint that contains lead. Lead from paint chips and dust can pose serious health hazards if not taken care properly.

Lead from paint, dust, and soil can be dangerous if not managed properly

• Fact: Lead exposure can harm young children and unborn babies.
• Fact: Even children who seem healthy may have high levels of lead in their bodies.
• Fact: People can get lead in their bodies by breathing or ingesting lead dust or chips.

  One out of every eleven children in the United States has dangerous levels of lead in the bloodstream.
  Lead is even more dangerous to children than adults because:
  • Babies and young children often put their hands and other objects in their mouths.
  • Children's growing bodies absorb more lead.
  • Children's brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to the damaging effects
    of lead.

  If not detected early, children with high levels of lead in their bodies can suffer from:

Federal law now requires that individuals be provided certain information before buying, renting or renovating pre-1978 housing. Starting June 1, 1999 a new EPA regulation will require renovators (painters, electrician, plumbers, remodeling contractors) working for compensation, to distribute a pamphlet to owners and occupants of most housing built prior to 1978 before commencing renovation activity.

• Landlords must disclose known information on lead-based paint hazards before leases take effect. Leases must include a federal form about lead-based paint.
• Sellers must disclose known information on lead-based paint hazards before selling a house. Sales contracts must include a federal form about lead-based paint in the building. Buyers have up to ten days to checks for lead hazards.
• Renovators must provide information on lead paint hazards before starting work.
